Clay rolled to his back on the cool sheets, scrubbing his hand over his face. His large frame covered most of the space in Christina’s small bed, but sleeping curled around each other felt so right. They had made it home before Amy the night before and immediately headed to bed. Making love with soft words and whispered endearments, his body moved over hers, each reverent thrust filled with meaning.

Now, she’d slipped from bed to make him breakfast before he needed to leave. Guilt speared through him over her unselfish action. He could feel the silent questions pouring from her, knowing his taciturn mood had invaded the bedroom. But he had no answers and found conversation to be difficult when so much was swirling in his mind.

Smart enough to know his silence was born and bred from his childhood, he lacked the knowledge to move past his reticence. Having witnessed his parents’ angry arguments and nasty insults hurled toward each other, neither willing to give an inch, he would fall into silence, hiding when a child and leaving the house when a teen. Avoidance seemed to be the best course of action. And here I am, taking the chickenshit way out instead of talking to her.

He envied Drew and Rank’s ability to throw out witty comments no matter what mood they were in. Snorting, he also knew that Babs and Helena could see straight through their men’s attempts at deflecting.

Glancing at his watch, he threw the covers back and quickly dressed in the clothes he’d worn to the bar the previous night. No answers were forthcoming, and he needed to hit the road for his drive home. Heading to the kitchen, he was greeted with Christina’s wide smile but concerned eyes. Walking straight to her, he pulled her into his embrace and kissed her soundly. “You didn’t have to do this, babe, but thanks for breakfast.”

She kept her smile firmly in place as she set two plates on the counter, and they slid onto side-by-side stools. Eating mostly in silence, she walked him to the door as he readied to leave. Encircling his waist with her arms, she leaned back and held his gaze. “Are you sure you’re okay, Clay?”

Pulling her in close, he kissed her deeply. “Absolutely.” Feeling the need to offer some kind of explanation, he added, “I know I’ve been poor company. I just have a case on my mind. I’m sorry.”

“Honey, you never have to apologize. I know the work you do is important and stressful. I also know you can’t talk about the cases you’re working on, so all I can do is just try to support you.”

Another round of guilt hit him, and he bent to kiss her once again. “That means everything, babe.”

She hesitated, then said, “I don’t have a lot of violin practices this week since the symphony’s season is almost over. But I need to let you know that I’ll be in Ottawa Wednesday night. The band will head up that morning and be back the next day.
